Atascosa County Chief Deputy David Soward said this week that there has been a recent explosion in the number of copper thefts.

There were three pivot irrigation well systems that had the electrical wiring ripped out. The wells were located in the Leming and Poteet areas.

Soward also said there have been three thefts of copper from the same plant during the past 1-1/2 months.

In addition, there have been multiple thefts of copper from cell phone towers and at least two construction sites in the northern part of Atascosa County.

“We have stepped up measures to apprehend suspects,” said Chief Deputy Soward said.

Sgt. Investigators Wayne Stratton and Matt Miller have been heading up the Copper Theft Task Force.
