Poteet gives up 12 points in fourth quarter in Halloween loss to Sam Houston.

SAN ANTONIO – The Poteet Aggies held its own for the better part of three quarters but it just wasn’t enough.

The Sam Houston Hurricanes (7-2, 3-1 in Dist. 27-3A) overcame five fumbles lost and made it count in the fourth quarter in a 31-20 win over the Aggies at Alamo Stadium on Saturday for Halloween.

Poteet (3-5, 0-4) will look to end the season on a high note when they face Marion (1-8, 0-4) on Friday.

After Sam Houston scored on a 1-yard run by Dominique Broadnax-Lee in the first quarter, the Aggies answered and tied the score 6-6. Christian Contreras rambled 33 yards for the touchdown.

Broadnax-Lee ended the first quarter with a 40-yard run and a 13-6 Hurricanes lead.

Senior tailback Matt Santos tied the game 13-13 with an 8-yard run to begin the second quarter and keep the Aggies in it.

But on the ensuing drive, Sam Houston capped it with a 1-yard run by E.J. Perkins-Lovings for the 19-13 lead with 8:34 remaining until halftime.

Poteet stole momentum after quarterback Joe Sanchez found Brandon Herrera for the 39-yard touchdown pass as time expired. Domingo Casias’ extra point kick gave the Aggies a 20-19 lead at the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Sam Houston took over and scored twice on two Broadnax-Lee touchdowns on runs of 7- and 1-yard respectively.

Sam Houston rushed for 334 yards as a team while Poteet rambled 329 yards of offense.

Santos led the Aggies with 129 yards rushing on 24 carries. Sanchez completed eight of 18 passes for 121 yards and one interception.

The Hurricane’s overcame seven fumbles and lost five of them but the Aggies could not capitalize.

“We played well for three quarters,” said Poteet Head Coach Mario Heredia. “We couldn’t make anything happen with the turnovers and ultimately, their athleticism took over in the fourth quarter.

Overall, I was very pleased with our offensive line playing against one of the most talented defensive lines in our district. I’m proud of our kids because they don’t quit playing.”
