DPS Trooper Jim Kellert investigated the accident and said this week that the accident is still under investigation.
Trooper Kellert said the two vehicles involved in the accident were both traveling north on County Road 421 (6th Street) in Christine. The first vehicle was a black 2001 Ford Taurus driven by Lucia Gonzalez de Sanchez, age 36, of San Antonio. She was killed in the accident.
The second vehicle was a white Chevrolet 4x4 pickup driven by Oscar Resendiz, age 48, also of San Antonio.
The trooper said there was some indication that Gonzalez de Sanchez may have attempted to correct the direction of her travel to the left as she crossed FM-140 or attempted to turn left toward Hwy. 16.
Trooper Kellert explained that the Co. Rd. 421 roadway narrows dramatically from south side of FM-140 to the north side. The difference in the width of the roadway may be 6-8 feet narrower on the north side. The driver may have tried to make a last second attempt to make the left turn, possibly to travel back to San Antonio.
DPS said Resendiz’ truck became airborne as it crossed the apex of the center of FM-140. “It caught air,” Trooper Kellert said, “and caught the black car from the left side to center. It climbed on top of the Taurus and rolled off the other side, ending up on its top.” After the vehicles made contact, the two vehicles traveled about 100 feet and crushed the car as the pickup rolled over it.
Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 Judge Betty Caballero pronounced Gonzalez de Sanchez dead at the scene around 1 a.m. Sunday, October 25.
Resendiz was treated at the scene by Atascosa County EMS and was taken to STRMC in Jourdanton where he was released just before 5 a.m. Sunday.
