Officials hush-hush as brawl in Runge is investigated.

RUNGE – A sideline clearing fight occurred on Friday night of the conclusion of Runge’s win over Charlotte 16-13.

According to Charlotte Principal Bryan Borth in a phone interview on Monday evening, Charlotte’s last gasp for a win ended in a pass being intercepted by Runge. A late hit by Runge, that apparently was a no-call, sparked the fight.

“Emotions were running high,” said Borth. “Tempers boiled over and it sparked this. Our coaches went out there to restore peace.”

According to Borth, no one was injured in the melee.

Runge Head Coach Bradley McElroy was contacted on Monday and told the Pleasanton Express he was unable to speak about the incident because of an investigation into the matter.

An email to Charlotte Head Coach Richard Trevino was not returned.

Borth said that Charlotte is investigating the situation themselves and issuing punishments within house.

UIL was unaware of the incident and told the Pleasanton Express that they would look into it and wait for an official report from the TASO officials on duty that evening.

A constable in Runge is assigned to football games and called for backup from Karnes County deputies when the brawl began, according to the Karnes County Sheriff’s Department receptionist.
