Two weeks ago there were five Brush Country ball teams alive and well in the State Baseball/Softball Playoffs. Last week, only three teams were able to survive the fight and this week only one remains standing. As summer nears, the world of sports reporting slows down, but a busy summer lies ahead.

The recent fishing spring season at the Choke Canyon Reservoir was one of the most disappointing for me as far as catching largemouth bass is concerned.

As most of you know, I love to fish for bass and I go to Choke and Falcon Lakes as often as I can, or as often as I can afford the gas.

Missed opportunities offensively and errors defensively proved to be costly when the Class 1A, Area Playoff series ended Saturday afternoon at Trojan Field. Charlotte (19-11) saw their season come to an end at the hands of the district champion Kenedy Lions (16-3), as they were swept in two straight games during the Area Playoffs.

Jourdanton AAU Summer Track news

It’s that time of year again to join the Jourdanton AAU Summer Track Club. We will have a parents meeting June 4th at 7 a.m. to discuss practice times, track dates and a few changes to our track club. Practices will run Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. for the weeks of June 4th and June 11th. The following weeks we will practice Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

It is time again for athletic physicals and paperwork for next year’s athletes. UIL and Jourdanton I.S.D. require all incoming 7th and 9th graders and 11th graders to take a physical. Also any athlete who had surgery for any reason or broke any bone during the last school year will have to have a physical.

Attention Pleasanton High School and Junior High Athletes: Physicals will be held in the Pleasanton Athletic Complex on the 22nd and 23rd of May starting at 4:00 p.m. The cost will be $15 dollars EXACT CASH. Medical Packets will be available the week before and athletes must bring packets filled out and ready to complete by physicians.

Jourdanton Senior Daniel Oliva and McMullen County Sophomore Heather Gillin wrapped up a very successful season at Meyers Stadium in Austin this past weekend. After both athletes punched their ticket to the state meet, they competed well against stiff competition in their respective classifications.

Texas Tigers blast into the playoffs

The Texas Tigers of the Crossroads Amateur Football League secured a playoff spot with a 52 to 0 win over the San Antonio Knights Saturday night. With their backs against the wall the Tigers won three out of their last four games. Needing 37 points to break a tie with another team they responded with a 52 point shutout.

Congratulations to Robert Benavidez, Daryn Garza, and Isaiah Oropeza of the Xtreme Speed Muddogs 10U Select Baseball Team out of San Antonio. The team won first place over the weekend in a tournament that was played at Prospect Park in San Antonio with a 5-0 record. All three boys attend Poteet Intermediate School and are having an outstanding season.

The Pleasanton Athletic Department will be hosting a youth football camp on June 5th-7th. The camp will be offered to students who are currently in 2nd through 8th grade. The camp will be from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on all three days.
