Antu
Susie T. Antu, a resident of Poteet, Texas, passed away at her home on Friday, June 25, 2004 at the age of 85 years. A homemaker, she was born in Poteet, Texas on October 15, 1918. She is survived by a son, Alfredo Antu Sr. of Poteet; a daughter-in-law, Mary Jo Antu of Uvalde, Texas; two sisters, Josefa Torres and Eloise Herrera, both of Poteet; a grandson, Alfredo Antu Jr.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation was held Sunday, June 27, 2004 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at St. Philip of Benizi Catholic Church in Poteet with rosary at 7 p.m. Services were conducted Monday, June 28, at 9 a.m. at St. Philip of Benizi Church. Ayala
Louisa Magdalena Ayala, age 65, passed away in San Antonio, Texas on Sunday, June 27, 2004. She was born onJuly 22, 1938 in Jourdanton, Texas to Apolonio and Catherine Brown Flores. She made her home in Jourdanton all her life. Mrs. Ayala attended the Jourdanton schools and after her education, she married her husband, Carlos Ayala, on March 21, 1956. He preceded her in death on January 13, 2000. Mrs. Ayala was a lab assistant for over 20 years with the Tri-City Hospital until ill health forced her retirement. She was a member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church and for over 17 years she and her husband ran their weekly Bingo. She was an excellent seamstress where she sewed and crocheted, making quilts and dolls which she gave to her friends and members of her family. She loved to travel with her husband Carlos. They traveled all over the world; but one of her favorite places was Las Vegas because of her love to gamble. She loved to cook and have her family around her. At Thanksgiving she always prepared plenty of food and sent plates to her friends. She was a lady who loved all children, especially her children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Carlos Ayala, and is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law: Ruth Ann Ayala, Sara and Bruce Hodgson, Tuesday Ayala and Oscar Elizondo, all of Jourdanton; and Cathy Ayala and Charles Watts of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Carlos Andres Ayala of Houston and Christopher and Tricia Ayala of Fredericksburg, Texas; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Beatrice and Jesus Rodriguez of Houston, and Lucy Flores of Jourdanton; one brother and sister-in-law, A. Edward and Mary Flores of Mont Belvieu, Texas; 12 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A Rosary and Vigil was held Tuesday, June 29, 2004 at 7:30 p.m. in the chapel of the Tri-City Funeral Home with the Rev. Lenin Naffate officiating. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Jourdanton on Wednesday, June 30, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Francis McHugh officiating. Interment will be in the San Jose Cemetery, Jourdanton, under the directions of Tri-City Funeral Home of Jourdanton, TX, Thomas A. Lange, Funeral Director.
Beutnagel
Gladys Henson Beutnagel, age 78, passed away at her residence in Mesquite, Texas on Saturday, June 26, 2004. She was born in Verdi, Texas on May 14, 1926 and lived most of her life in Atascosa County. She served as secretary for First Baptist Church in Pleasanton for many, many years. She was a charter member of the Brush Country Art Club and was known for her magic realism still lifes in oil. She brought the Brush Country to life through her paintings. She also taught art classes and was a mentor to beginning artists. She is survived by a son, Mark Beutnagel and wife Lynda of Mesquite; two grandchildren, Rebecca Beutnagel and Candace Beutnagel, both of Mesquite; five sisters, Norma Cooper of Fort Collins, Colo.; Florence Schneider of Pleasanton; Vivian Knight and husband C.A. of Bulverde; Clara Crabb and husband Ernest of Pleasanton; and Doris Lewis of Devine, Texas; and one brother, Ralph Henson and wife Winnie of Midlothian, Texas. Chris Garza of Balch Springs, Texas was born on September 6, 1940 and passed away Thursday, June 24, 2004. Erma Hernandez, age 63, a resident of Hurlburt Field, Florida, passed away Friday, June 25, 2004 at Eglin AFB Medical Center in Florida. A homemaker, she was born in Pleasanton, Texas on August 28, 1940. She is survived by four sons, Ruben Hernandez Sr. of Pearland, Texas; Rowland Hernandez, Fayetteville, NC; Richard Hernandez, Bonnie Lake, WA; Ronald Hernandez, Fayetteville, NC; two daughters, Norma J. Gizoni and Yvonne Espino, both of Eglin AFB, Fla.; two brothers, Julian Garza of Alamo, Texas; and Reynaldo Garza of Tennessee; four sisters, Evalia Aguilar and Anastacia Soliz, both of Poteet; Elva Valdez, Pleasanton; and Emily Salazar, Poteet; 16 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Joyce “Jodie” Lorraine (Hearn) Hurley of Pleasanton, 75, passed away Thursday, June 24, 2004 at a San Antonio hospital. She was born in San Antonio, Texas on June 25, 1928, but lived all her life in Atascosa County. She graduated from Poteet High School and attended Baylor University. She married M. Charles Hurley and they lived in Poteet where he worked in the family mortuary business. Hurley Funeral Home built a new facility in Pleasanton in 1936 and they moved to Pleasanton in 1951. She was active in the business, serving as the funeral home’s first and only organist. She served as organist at First Baptist Church in Pleasanton and was very active in church life, helping organize Wednesday night meals prior to prayer service. She also studied art, collected pottery and old bottles, enjoyed cooking and taking care of her grandchildren. She continued to serve as organist at the funeral home until a month ago until she could not continue because of ill health. She is survived by two sons, Patrick C. Hurley Sr. and wife Connie; Ross Hearn Hurley and wife Rachel, all of Pleasanton; a daughter, Carole Burke and husband Rod of Georgetown; a sister, Strelsa Burks and husband Bill of Austin; five grandchildren, Patrick C. Hurley Jr. and wife Christina of Pleasanton; Adam Burke of Georgetown; Candace Hurley, Evan Ross Hurley and Grant Hurley, all of Pleasanton. She was preceded in death by her father, J. Fred Hearn; her mother, Alma Rogers Hearn; and her husband, M. Charles Hurley Jr. Visitation was held Friday, June 25, 2004, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton. Magdalen “Madge” Byrne Kuykendall, age 89, passed away in Jourdanton, Texas on June 27, 2004. Magdalen was known by her friends as Madge and was born on July 31, 1914 to Walter Linden and Mary Josephine Byrne Henry in McMullen County, near Tilden, Texas. In her earlier years, she lived on her family ranch known as the Byrne Ranch near Calliham, Texas. She would ride horseback to class every day, sometimes having to cross creeks filled with water after a big rain. After graduation, she married Charles Robert Kuykendall and moved to La Salle County where they lived in Fowlerton, Texas. They then moved to Webb County where they lived and ranched for quite a few years on the Kilborn Ranch. Their next move was to Aguilares, further south in Webb County where they were involved in raising Beef Master Cattle and quarter horses. Altogether, she and her family ranched in Zapata, Webb, La Salle and McMullen counties. She rode horseback with her husband, rounding up the livestock as well as cooking many meals. Many of these she cooked over a campfire with a Dutch oven. She loved to garden and raise her own vegetables and flowers and she also was a gifted seamstress, making throw pillows with western scenes and hand embroidery. She was an artist, painting pictures for her home and for her friends. When she lived in Laredo, Madge was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Altar Society where she donated many of her crafts to church fundraisers. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Charles Robert Kuykendall in 1968 and three sons, Charles Robert Jr., Arnold Walter and Thomas Eugene Kuykendall; and one brother, Thad Henry. She is survived by her daughter, Tommye Cecilia Kuykendall of Jourdanton; and sister, Mary Alice Lansford of Jourdanton; and one brother, James Roscoe Henry of Tilden; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A Rosary and Vigil will be held at the Tri-City Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said Thursday, July 1, 2004 at 10 a.m. at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Jourdanton, with Rev. Lenin Naffate officiating. Interment will follow in the Hill Top Cemetery, Tilden. Serving as pallbearers will be Thomas Ralph Lansford Jr., T.R. Frank V. Luna Sr., age 78, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2004 in a Jourdanton nursing home. He was born April 25, 1926 in Jourdanton, Texas and had made his home in Charlotte, Texas. He worked as a pumper. He is survived by his wife, Jesusa Luna of Charlotte; four sons and one daughter: Frank Luna and wife Chela; Juan Luna, Mike Luna and wife Margie; David Luna and wife Debbie; Angie Castillo and husband Gilbert, all of Charlotte; three sisters, Beatrice Smiley of Alice; Ramona Corella and Teresa Savage, both of Jourdanton, Texas; 22 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Pete Luna. Pacheco of Pleasanton; Gloria A. Baldonado, Aransas Pass; and Clara A. Aguero and husband Charlie of Christine; two brothers, Alberto Mireles of Brownsville, and Epefino Mireles, La Mesa; two sisters, Ricarda Mireles of Dallas; and Andrea Cantu of Fredericksburg; and 19 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Lorenza Mireles; three daughters, Linda, Lilly and Ruby; two sisters, Simona Arguijo and Maria Mireles; brothers, Domingo Mireles and Wonnie Mireles; a son-in-law, Lou Pacheco and a grandson, Jesse Noel Arguijo.
