Mayes Rubelle Avril Mayes of Willis, went to be with her Lord on April 23, 2010, four months and one week shy of her 99th birthday. She was born near Somerset in Atascosa County on August 30, 1911 to Nora and George Thomas. On Christmas Eve in 1929 she married Henry Clay Mayes, the love of her life, who died in 1975. Rubelle called the 44 years of their marriage “the very best part of my life.” She and Henry spent much of their married life in San Antonio where they raised their three children – Henry Carl, Avril Carole, and Gerald Wayne. She also worked downtown at Frost Bros. Department Store for 17 years. Eventually she and Henry returned to Thomas Road just north of Poteet. She was committed to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and found her greatest pleasure in spending time with them. Until recent years she loved cooking for her family, and she didn’t allow anyone to leave her table hungry. In fact, she always insisted on packing up leftovers in plastic containers to send home with you whether you wanted them or not! For those who celebrated a birthday at her house she would cook their favorite dish, like the enchiladas topped with mashed potatoes one daughter-in-law always requested. She loved baking cookies during the Christmas season and boxing them up for her children and grandchildren to enjoy. Those homemade cookies from “Grandmother” were a much-anticipated gift. For decades she kept four weekly appointments: worship and Bible study on Sunday morning and Sunday night, prayer meeting on Wednesday night, and a shampoo and set at Helen’s House of Beauty in Poteet each Friday (with a perm every third month). Though Rubelle had a limited formal education, she was a life-long student of the Bible. For 65 continuous years she shared her wisdom and knowledge, teaching children, youth, and adults in Sunday School. She also had a passion for missions and faithfully supported the Women’s Missionary Union in the Baptist churches she attended. In her later years she rebounded from a number of falls and illnesses, demonstrating her strength and “toughness,” earning the nickname “Energizer Bunny.” (One friend of the family said, “She must be put together with barbed wire and leather, because she is tough and prickly!”) When bitten by a copperhead snake when she was eighty-something, she killed the snake that bit her, walked calmly into her kitchen, planted her foot into a bucket of ice, then called her son, Carl, who lived across the pasture and said, “I think you need to take me to the hospital.” In December of 2003 she moved from Poteet to Willis into the brand new house built by her grandson-in-law, Tom Ansley. Though she never stopped calling Poteet “home,” her years in Willis were rich and fulfilling as she was showered with affection and attention by her daughter Carole, her granddaughters Debra, Donna, and Denise and their children, and her loving caregivers Sylvia Carrillo and her son, Antonio Cavazos. Mrs. Mayes is preceded in death by her husband Henry Clay Mayes, parents George and Nora Thomas, brothers Robert Thomas and Preston Thomas, sisters Freda Mayes and Ollie Holder and also Michelle Pelot. Rubelle is survived by her sons Carl Mayes and wife Maxine of Boerne and Gerald Mayes and wife Opalee of Brackettville; daughter Carole Dooley and husband Charles of Conroe; grandchildren Ronnie Mayes and wife Pat of Victoria, Roy Mayes and wife Julie of Fort Worth, Randy Mayes and wife Brenda of Fort Worth, Debra McCammon and husband Joe of Conroe, Donna Willingham and Terry of Montgomery, Denise Ansley and Tom of Willis, Dewayne Mayes and wife Bonnie of Brackettville and Melody Montgomery and husband Greg of Del Rio. She also leaves behind 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; brother George D. Thomas of Poteet and sister Altha Sample of Corpus Christi. Visitation was at the Hurley Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 27, from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, April 28, at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Poteet. Burial will follow at the Rutledge Cemetery in Poteet. For those who wish to make a charitable donation instead of flowers, please make them to the First Baptist Church of Poteet, P. O.
