Coward Jessie Almeda (Jenkins) Coward, age 87, of Jourdanton, passed away Thursday, April 22, 2004 in Pleasanton. She was born in Jourdanton, Texas on July 24, 1916. She is survived by two sons, Henry Halff Coward Jr. of Poteet; and John Ras Coward of Jourdanton; two sisters, Jimmie Walker of Jourdanton; and Florence Edith Jenkins of Poteet; two brothers, Ray Jenkins of Jourdanton and Travis Jenkins of Colorado; a sister, Mary Jane Spencer of San Antonio; and three grandchildren - Tiffanie Arnold of Port Aransas; Henry H. Coward III of Houston; and Christy Caye Coward of Austin. Visitation was held Friday, April 23, from 2-8 p.m. at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton. Arrangements were by Hurley Funeral Home of Pleasanton. Cruz Abel G. Cruz, age 73, of Jourdanton, Texas passed away Thursday, April 15, 2004 at his residence. He was born in Jourdanton on August 23, 1930. He operated Abel Lease Service. Mr. Cruz is survived by his wife, Laura Cruz of Jourdanton; a daughter, Stella Morales of Jourdanton; three brothers, Ed Cruz, Jourdanton; Flavio “Clyde” Cruz, Charlotte, Texas; and Alex Cruz, Devine; seven sisters, Eva Garza and Alicia Hernandez, both of San Antonio; Linda Trevino, Corpus Christi; Stella Cruz, San Antonio; Mary Hanson, Rancho Cordova, Cal.; Rosie Figueroa, Pleasanton; and Minnie Salazar of Devine; and one granddaughter, Ariana Foster. He was preceded in death by his father, Jesus Cruz; his mother, Simona Cruz; and a brother, Albert Cruz. Cannon Don Cannon, age 78 of Jourdanton, Texas passed away at his home Tuesday, April 27, 2004. He was born in Pleasanton, Texas on October 20, 1925. He had worked as an oil field pumper. He is survived by his daughter, Donnelle Remmier and husband Larry; and son, Phil Cannon and wife Robin. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Bud Duhon as well as six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Cannon; parents, Bill and Beulah Cannon; and daughter, Cathi Duhon. Arrangements by Hurley Funeral Home of Pleasanton. McLeod Retired Colonel Walter Grey McLeod, age 89, passed away April 19, 2004 at his home in Poteet, Texas. He was born on October 19, 1914 in Jackson, Alabama to H.M. McLeod and Helen Cannady. On July 13, 1940, he married Anne Breckenridge who preceded him in death on September 8, 2001 after 61 years of marriage. Chaplain McLeod entered the service of his country on October 28, 1942 in Jackson, Alabama and served until his retirement on November 30, 1970. During that time, he served as Chaplain at many military bases all over the world. After his retirement with the rank of Colonel, they moved to Poteet in 1978. Among the civilian parishes Chaplain McLeod served were the Oak Chapel, Methodist Church, Silver Spring, Maryland; Walter Reed Army Hospital, Washington, D.C.; and Somerset United Methodist Church, Somerset, Texas. Chaplain McLeod and his wife were completely devoted to each other and they loved to have their family around them where they shared many wonderful meals together at different occasions. Walter touched many lives during his life and his compassion, understanding and love for his fellow man will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. He received degrees from Birmingham Southern College, Birmingham, Alabama and Duke University, Durham, North Carolina. In the course of his duty, he served as Post Chaplain in Yokohama, Japan; Post Chaplain, United States Military Academy, West Point; 5th U.S. Army Chaplain, Fort Sheridan, Illinois; and Post Chaplain, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, among other assignments prior to his retirement in 1970. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle East Medal, WW II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), European Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Army Commendation Medal, and Legion of Merit. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and one son, David McNeel McLeod, three sisters and four brothers. He is survived by two daughters: Barbara (Bobbie) McLeod Teska and Betsy McLeod Atkins, both of San Antonio; two sons, Walter Grey McLeod Jr. and wife Linda and Ronald “Ron” Cannady McLeod, both of Austin; two sisters: Mary Leila McLeod and Catherine Gaynor McLeod, both of Jackson, Ala., and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Visitation was held Thursday, April 22, from 1-3 p.m. at the Tri-City Funeral Home, Jourdanton, Texas. Funeral services were held Friday, April 23, at 10 a.m. at the Methodist Church in Poteet, Texas with the Rev. Dale Brown officiating. Interment services were held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, Fort Sam Houston, Texas at 1:30 p.m. where he was buried next to his wife with full military honors. Ratcliff ratcliff Daniel Emerson Ratcliff Jr., age 58, passed away at his residence in Llano, Texas on Monday, April 26, 2004. He was born on August 4, 1945 in Alameda, California to Fannie Bell (Ondrej) and Daniel Emerson Ratcliff Sr. He was a 1966 graduate of the University of Texas. Daniel was employed as a Systems Analyst for I.T. He had been a resident in Llano since the summer of 2003, coming from San Antonio. He married Patricia Adams on May 25, 1996 in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. He was preceded in death by both his parents. He is survived by his wife, Patty Ratcliff of Llano; a daughter, Dana Lynn Evans of Bryan, Texas; son, Daniel Emerson Ratcliff III of San Marcos, Texas; and Nathaniel Benjamin Ratcliff of Llano; a brother, Jonathan Ratcliff and wife Cherie of Bastrop, Texas; and three grandchildren, Abby, Drew and Ty. Services will be held Thursday, April 29, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David Griffin officiating. Burial will be in the Llano City Cemetery. Lozano Hector Rudolph Lozano, age 59, a lifelong resident of Poteet, Texas succumbed after a long illness on Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at 5 p.m. at Christa Santa Rosa Hospice in San Antonio. Hector was born on September 18, 1944 to the late Leonard G. and Janie H. Lozano of Poteet. He was a graduate of Poteet High School. He is survived by his son, Craig Lozano of San Antonio; brother, Oscar D. Lozano of San Antonio; a sister, Bertha Farrington of Arlington; two nephews, Mark Farrington of McKinney and Robert Farrington of Irving; niece, Christina Wimberly of San Antonio; grand nieces, Alexandra Farrington of Aledo and Heather Ward of San Antonio; grand nephews Paul Guerrero and Brandon Wimberly of San Antonio; as well as numerous cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.
