She was preceded in death by her darling husband of almost 56 years, Lewis Wesley Reed Sr.; son-in-law Lynn Caraway; brothers Hayward Ray Henderson, Bruce Henderson, Arthur Lee Henderson, Jr., Willie Lane Henderson and Jessie Lee Henderson and sisters Margaret Wilson and Thelma Harris. From a young age, Sara knew and understood the value of hard work and moreover, of family. She was forced to leave school while in middle school to work the family farm when her father became blind. As a young woman, she left Alabama and traveled to Texas with a girlfriend to find work. There is where she met the love of her life. She and Lewis were married Dec. 22, 1950 in Corpus Christi. It was a dream of the young couple to return to the country life to raise their children. They bought a farm east of Leming in 1963. Over the years, they grew many different crops including, peanuts, corn, strawberries and hay. Every year they planted a huge garden that fed the family all year long. In her lifetime, Sara must have hoed miles and miles of fields. Sara and her husband shared workload equally. She tended cows, hogs, and chickens by his side. She remained by his side until cancer took him from us in 2006. Her greatest joy came from being with her family. Sara’s sense of humor and love of family were evidence of her strength and grace. It was these things that carried her through her own battle with cancer. Her grace and inner beauty shone brightly to all who met her. She touched many, many lives and we will miss her terribly.
